            interrupted from its thoughts , as it'd gotten rather invested in the feud between two ant colonies , peered up at the familiar face . 
            with the last swig of his canteen , he fished a cheap bic lighter from his pocket , and tossed it in the sergeant's direction . 
            without much else to do on his break , it tuned back into the territory dispute . 
            
            ' keep it , got five more in my bag . '

            relieved of anything to hold , the austrian leant back against its hands , and settled in for however long this new companion would grant him . sue him , it craved a little attention every now and then . 
            keen brown eyes , visible beneath the scrim net , surveyed the perimeter as he listened . a rather noncommittal noise sounded from it's throat , not quite disbelief , but unwilling to add context on the why . he didn't count in all of that . krueger wasn't like most to begin with . 
            
            ' familiar . . . that is your own belief , yes ? i can't say i care much for larger pictures . this is what i am good at , what challenges me . ' 

*  nolan  accepted  the  cigarette  without  ceremony,  but  his  gaze  lingered  on  krueger  for  a  moment  longer,  something  unreadable  flickering  behind  his  eyes.  respect,  maybe,  or  something  adjacent  to  it.  perhaps  an  understanding.  *  you've  seen  enough  to  stop  flinching,  *  he  muttered,  cigarette  rested  between  his  lips  momentarily.  *  that  kind  of  clarity’s  rare.  most  people  pretend  there’s  still  a  line  between  peace  and  war.  *  a  drag,  smoke  curling  from  his  nose.  *  not  saying  it’s  right.  just  familiar.

            with nothing better to do , it simply observed the stranger and his movements , content to coat its lungs with smoke , and wait . after a long week of reconnaissance , watching and waiting , several minutes longer was insignificant . 
            good enough company , better than his peers in the KSK¹ , krueger offered his own cigarette to the man . 
            
            ' it is simple to me , alter² : i cannot win against a man with powers . death happens , no use crying about if you'll hurt me or not . ' 
            
            he gave a shrug . most soldiers learnt to compartmentalise , exposed over and over to man made horrors until some things just clicked as their new normal , any day someone would splatter the walls and krueger would search their vest for a pack of cigarettes , because they had no use for it anymore .
            with viral footage of superheroes , it wasn't much more concerning , some people could fly now .
