I think I'm one of the few people that actually like Mabel from Gravity Falls, here's an explanation.
Yeah, sure, she isn't the greatest person, and is kind of selfish. Let's go over the negatives first.
Ruined Dipper's "chances" with Wendy for a pig. While attachement to animals is natural, not to this level.
Essentially forced Dipper to give up on what he was doing and help her with her summer romances. This isn't very forgivable. I mean sure, you can have your obsessions. But basically abandoning someone for the pursuit of romance? Yikes.
Alright, let me get on with everything else. Firstly, she was a 12 year old. It's natural to be a bit of a dick by then.
Dipper was selfish as well, essentially trying to change the past and mess up the natural order of time just for a "perfect date" with Wendy. If you think about it on the bigger scale, isn't that worse?
Ah right, on to defending Mabel...
Next thing to get into is the Lost Legends: Don't Dimension It comic. It would seem that the staff behind Gravity Falls really listened to fans regarding Mabel's character. They had her be the hero correctly, she was called out on her behavior and admits to Dipper about it. I will say I was a little bit impressed that I regained some appreciation of Mabel, and would've been interested to see what they would've done with her in the future. And this was done in a comic rather than an episode, that's an achievement in my book.
"Oh, but Mabel is at fault for Weirdmaggedon!"
She was having her 13th birthday party, and everything was going wrong. Wendy expressed how terrible it is to be a teenager, Grenda and Candy wouldn't come, and most importantly, Dipper had accepted to become Ford's apprentice, and not even come back with her to Piedmont!
She did lack proper development in the show, sure, but at the end of the day, does she really deserve all this hate? I don't think so..
