TheOrangutan

15 years ago I joined Wattpad.

I'd written a few odd little short stories and wasn't quite sure what to do with them. Pootling around the internet, I came across The Wattys Awards, which are still going strong on @TheWattys profile, and decided to enter a few stories.

I didn't win anything, but it got me hooked on Wattpad, it's community, and the sheer thrill of the knowledge that people all over the world could read my odd little imaginings.

Shortly afterwards, I joined the @Ambassadors team, and then in 2012 I was lucky enough to get a part-time job with Wattpad as an Outreach and Genre specialist, something that turned into a full time job a few years later.

Wattpad has absolutely changed my life, and very much for the better too. To those of you who have been a part of my journey, thank you, it's been quite a ride, and one I aim to continue for a while longer yet =]

So, back to the start. The Cubicle - https://www.wattpad.com/525196-a-gift-in-the-dark-the-cubicle - now a part of my short story collection - A Gift in the Dark - was the first story I ever posted on here, following shortly after by many others in that collection. A little nod to the past, and maybe something I need to get back into as it's been a while since I posted anything new.

          	Happy Sunday folks.

          	Cheers, Gavin

Gav, I have completed all the tasks. What should I do now?
Plus I want to change my discord username because at starting when I tried inserting my Wattpad username, it showed it's taken by someone else and now when I thought to change it, it's showing available. So can I have permission to change it?

TheOrangutan

@ivswrites - for now, nothing will happen for about 24 hours while we sift through the results of things. Then we'll get you moving next week on some more specific training. And yes, you can change your discord name if you want to, that's fine

Hi so I just finished writing my book. And I started writing it before 2023 so it won't be eligible for the wattys right.

And if so when would be the next wattys award so I can know when to start writing a new book

LimahhhE22

@LimahhhE22 oh alright Thank you

@LimahhhE22 - Hi, that's correct, yes. As you started writing it before 2023 it will not be eligible for this year's Wattys. I would also note that the Wattys 2026 has not started in the planning phase yet, but it will likely be similar to this year, so July time. So get writing now =]

Hi I was wondering if you can help me ! I haven’t gotten a banner saying I’m eligible for the Watty awards but I meet all the requirements, is it because my story was posted September of 2023?

TheOrangutan

@reilly_holland - ok, then next steps are to make sure your birthdate is correct, and you can check that via your profile settings.

Then you'll need to wait for 24 hours if you've made any updates.

If none of that works, then you'll need to contact the Wattpad Support Team via the Help pages (and please include screenshots to show you meet the eligibility criteria).

@TheOrangutan my word count is over 50k I checked and it is also marked complete , any other reasons why it wouldn’t allow me to enter?

TheOrangutan

@reilly_holland - if you're story was posted in Sept 2023 then that's fine in terms of date.

The most common reasons for the non-eligibility of a story is that it's either not hit the 50k min word count, or that your story hasn't been marked complete.

Hello Gavin,
many of us have heard about the new law Donald Trump wants to push through, which essentially overrides copyright laws regarding artificial intelligence. Have you received any information yet on how this will affect Wattpad and what it means for the platform? Does this mean that all US AI companies will be able to use Wattpad stories without the author's consent?
I would be happy to hear back if you've heard anything about this :)

TheOrangutan

@-Wildpfote- - Hi, I'm not a copyright specialist, but Wattpad are Canadian rather than American and I can't see us giving third parties free use of Wattpad content as ultimately you as the writer own the copyright to what you have written and posted on Wattpad. That is my point of view on this one though, so if you're wanting a more formal company stance on this I'd suggest sending in a message to Wattpad via the Help pages.

I followed you to thank you for your prompt responses to my questions about the Wattys. Then I read your profile and now I want to read more. Would you suggest which of your books I should start with?

TheOrangutan

@CFarley982 - Hi, well I can see you've starting reading my short story collection A Gift in the Dark, so I hope that you're enjoying those. I have a few longer pieces too, but the A Gift in the Dark collection is probably my personal favourite. Thank you for reading some of my work. Cheers, Gavin

Hello, just a quick question, will my book be evaluated further even if it doesn't get a lot of votes ?

TheOrangutan

@AamberSignn - ah ok, got you. And no, a story won't be removed just because it only has a few votes or reads or comments.

I am replying to the original post, I have just missed read it, I thought it said that if you don’t have enough people voting on your stories that your stories can be evicted lol my bad

Hi, I am asking this since I couldn't find anything regarding this in the rules document of Wattys or might've accidentally missed it but does Wattys have any specific word count requirement for each chapter? For example, if the word count of a chapter is around 1300 and another 3000, would that be a problem. Basically what I am asking is what the minimum and maximum word count is approximately for each chapter.

TheOrangutan

@_abhipreeti_ - Hi, no there's no word count requirement by chapter. We only ask that entries in English are 50k+ words, or for Spanish, Portuguese or Filipino that they're 40k+ words in total.
