I am a qualified Educational Psychologist, mother of two boys, (the eldest of whom has Autism) and a dreamer.
I undertook the writing of this novel after imagining Maya and her story during a lone car journey at a time in my life when I sensed that I finally needed to apply one of my favourite tutor's reflections that, 'if you keep on doing what you have always done, you will keep on getting what you have always got'.
This idea is pertinent in my book and a driving force in this writing. The taboo of mental illness remains strong in society, and even though I work in the area of mental health and advocate for young people and their families, it has taken me a long time to be open about my own mental wellness. And even though I have begun to be more open, there is a level of guardedness about this. I hope this novel will add to the current conversations and understanding of mental wellness. I hope people will relate to the key characters and ultimately that they might take the time to ask difficult questions, to listen without judgment and to reconnect with each other and the hidden treasures of the world. I did mention I'm a dreamer!
