Can someone tell me what kinning is? I think it might be happening to me with my comfort character Sirius Black and I don't know what is happening or if it is actually kinning or just another coping mechanism.

So, I looked up the definition on urban dictionary (the only way I learn the new words my generation makes up) and this is it: a kin is a character (or characters, you can have more than one kin) you associate/identify with. kins are to help you express yourself, comfort you, etc.
