I haven’t been involved the marauders fandom for a few years now, but after the UK’s Supreme Court ruling banning trans women from female spaces, I could not in good conscience leave my fanfiction up any longer. I had wanted it to simply fade into irrelevancy along with JKR’s works, but I realise deleting it is the only decent course of action. I don’t want some stupid fanfiction that I wrote as a teenager to encourage people to continue engaging with JKR’s works.
I don’t care about my past mentality, thinking that I could just make her characters queer as some sort of statement against her bigotry. The only meaningful protest against JK Rowling is to simply disengage with everything she’s written, and that includes taking down anything that associates itself with her writings. My fanfiction grew popular, and I am deeply sorry for that. My biggest regret is orphaning the fanfiction on Ao3 instead of deleting it completely, because no doubt it is still getting readers to this day. All I can do is minimise any damage going forward, and apologise for ever partaking in this fandom.
I can’t fix what I enabled, but I’m hoping to encourage others to turn away from her world entirely. I am a trans person living in the UK, and I deal with the consequences of JKR’s bigotry every single day. There is nothing in her works worth the harm she’s causing. There is no amount of changes to canon that can ever meaningfully fix the intrinsic bigotry that is written in her stories.
I’m sorry if this comes as a shock, but in my opinion, protecting trans people will always be the number one priority. I do not condone engaging with Harry Potter, even in a non-financial way, because relevancy is giving JKR the power to keep hurting minorities, and I do not condone my past self for even trying.
Please take this opportunity to check out UK charities such as Mermaids and Switchboard, which are helping to support trans people at an extremely scary time right now. Thank you ❤️
