Ok so I could rant about this for ages, but I’ll try to keep it short. Now, I could talk about how messed up the US education system is, but can we please talk about the British one for a minute? For those of you who don’t know how it works; in year 9 (age 13&14) you have to choose subjects to study. These are your GCSEs. ( don’t ask me what it stands for cause no one has any idea) You are required to do English, maths and two or three sciences, then you choose one from a language, history, geography or computer science. (This is how it works in my school, it might change a bit from school to school) then, you have three choices of your own, where you can choose any subject. Then, you study these subjects until year 11 when you take exams, which gives you your grade. (For confused Americans and other ppl, it’s basically like OWLs in Harry Potter. In England we don’t have a gpa, our grade is determined by these exams) then, after your GCSEs you choose three subjects which are your A levels. (You don’t have to do maths, English, etc this time) which A levels you can do is determined by the GCSEs you did. You then take your A level exams in year 13, then if you choose to you go to university. (Which, let’s be honest, if you want to have a steady, reliable income, you have to due to the society we live in) which university courses you can do are determined by your A levels. Your future job will also basically be based on your university choice. So, to recap, GCSE - A levels- university - job, is basically how it goes. So, at 13/14, we are expected to have some kind of clue what we want to do as a career, when we haven’t even finished going through puberty. I think that’s pretty messed up. Like, come on, if you ask most 18 year olds what they want to do with their life they wouldn’t know, why would you expect this of 13 and 14 year olds! This is why ppl get stuck in jobs they hate. Anyway, that was definitely not short, but idc, I just felt the need to rant about that
