Tomorrow, I will be participating in the virtual launch party for the inaugural issue of Kawandi Magazine, which features four of my poems. I will be reading alongside four other contributors. Registration is free with a suggested donation and will close an hour before the event begins. If you want to support Black literature and an independent Black woman-led magazine, and listen to some poetry and prose, then feel free to drop in!

My blog is called Born in Babylon and my username is @stainedwings

Apparently, it's wrong to think of BAs as our own distinct ethnic group, and we're just Africans with a different history...(even tho that different history is what forced us away from being strictly African but I digress). It's an interesting discussion tho ngl

This is the nonfiction project I am currently working on. I've decided to post some drafts as I write them; consider the first essay here as a kind of introduction to what I am thinking about and trying to reconcile with.

Also, please let me know if any of this makes any sense lol I really might just be yapping just to yap

ALSO, if you are SWANA or MENA, please let me know if I am overstepping any boundaries. I ultimately want this project to showcase our "nearnesses" in the words of Solmaz Sharif whilst also respecting our differences and be something like a show of solidarity. I understand that intent doesn't equal impact, so if my work feels appropriative, please tell me!!!

I've been going back and forth with whether to post these or not, but I've decided that I've been starving y'all for way too long lol so please enjoy these poems I've been writing as I've begun researching for a nonfiction project about Black American exile and displacement and our "nearnesses" (in the words of the esteemed Solmaz Sharif) with Indigenous people and people of the Global South, particularly Iranian, Afghan, Palestinian, and Sudanese peoples.

ALSO!! This book is basically going to be a more polished version of mutilations (if y'all remember that book lmao)

ALSO! These poems are primarily thinking about complicity, home, and the potential for solidarity, as well as my mother's military service and rethinking my position as a soldier's daughter who was born during The War on Terror, especially considering this time period is frequently interrogated by poets whom I love, like Solmaz Sharif and Aria Aber, in their work.

@UNWILTED what a hauntingly beautiful poem this is! the most striking thing about it is the way you reclaimed "blackness" by pulling it through a spectrum of extremes. i particularly love the transition from the "black enough to disappear" to the "Tar baby" the resilient alchemy in this is incredibly moving.

Two journals I'm featured in are coming out next week! Revolute 007 comes out on March 2nd and the inaugural issue of Kawandi Magazine comes out on March 3rd. I'll be posting the links here ofc.

Kawandi will have both a digital release in March and a print release at a later date. I'll keep y'all posted in case anyone would be interested in purchasing a copy.
