For some reason my comment didn’t go through so I’m posting here if it’s okay here we go!
I LOVE LOVE LONG COMMENTS KEEP IT UP.
You are absolutely meant to question it! Especially in the beginning of book 2 where even Selene mentions she’s only surrounded by HIS friends—that was why it was detrimental Selene had her own circle of friends and family.
The whole Autumn Court arc was meant to establish she has people OUTSIDE OF Rhysand and she has options—in the end she could have stayed in the cabin and decided to go with Rhysand. Vaerin, then Veyra, are her support system. Even UTM she had Vaerin in a way.
Rhysand also mentions she’s not bound by the rules of his court—in fact, idk if you’re at that part yet—but her connection to Eris will be discussed. Selene def puts her foot down. Rhysand also is encouraging of her visiting other courts.
While at this point it’s a sweet moment—Ahhahaha—and Selene is not dependent on Rhysand, there’s still something there where Selene can’t say “I love you” yet because she needs to learn and grow herself first.

She will spread her wings even more with visiting every court. Remember Feyre only visited Night Court every week during her trauma, while Selene is going to be out seeing every other court, making connections and learning more.
Rhysand brought her during the Raid because either she would be killed or brought prisoner regardless. He was under Amarantha’s orders and he didn’t know at that time—it was realistic he was seeking his own survival just like Selene did when she bound all the High Lords to her (which she was worried about, because Rhysand had every right to get angry since it’s very similar to what Amarantha did).
Rhysand also mentioned in his POV he thought since she was from another world, she could have powers like Amren so she could save them—alas, he was wrong.
They get to know each other for a whole year UTM. They help each other. Rhysand summons her often so she doesn’t end up doing the hard labour. He brings her books that have knowledge on how to kill Fae, washes her with a blindfold when she can’t.
That being said, Selene only allows herself to feel for him when she’s equals with him—you will see more of that later as well. But she’s no longer afraid to put her foot down. There are moments they clash and it’s important because it shows she can afford to be angry—they are on equal ground.
That being said, while she’s not dependent or isolated on Rhys at this point, there’s definitely a self-discovery journey Selene also needs to take alone—which you will see and make more sense at the end of book 2.
