Ah, studying the Japanese characters is difficult at first, but eventually becomes like second nature. The first alphabet you should learn is Hiragana, which has a bunch of curvy characters. Once you're familiar with hiragana, begin to learn katakana. Katakana is used often for foreign words, like ice cream. I wouldn't worry about kanji until you've got hiragana and katakana down.
A simple way to memorize them is to put pictures with them. For example:

I imagine that it is the side view of someone's hair. SHI has long hair.

’りんご!’ That's 'ringo', which is 'apple' in Japanese. I remember this word due to my old love for tamagotchis, which used to have a character called ringotchi, who was an apple.
