Well, that only took me... a year? Less? More? I don't know. Chapter 10 of Sky Water is finally up--rough and ready for criticism! Thank you for your patience.

Alexis137024

Hi, I've seen you on two of the stories I read and I saw a few of your comments and I wanted to ask what a hired critic is and what you do.

VagrantDust

@Alexis137024 well, it seems you saw what I do. A hired critic reads through a certain number of chapters and points out any number of things. Different critics look for different things, and people bicker over what a critic should look for. Sometimes I'm given a very specific thing to look for, like character development. Other times, it's more general. Usually half of what I do is opinion based (impressions on characters and writing), the other half is more technical stuff. Authors pay me by reading my work and leaving comments.

Who's watching the World Cup?

SmokeAndOranges

@VagrantDust Dang, I never answered this xD Welp, my country didn't even make it into the cup in the first place, so I had my bets on Croatia. So close!

I was one of the most soccerly ineducated people in the office, so I went with my gut feeling on most of the games. I spent most of the cup in the lead. I loved the topsy-turvy feel of the whole thing; it was fun.

Who are you pulling for? This year everything seems to be upside down.

@VagrantDust I may or may not be winning the soccer pool (betting game) at my workplace...

Your suffering has brought me great joy. Thanks for that xD

@Cross-Warrior The Reasons to Live story is the only one that gives much such a hard time.

@VagrantDust Is it the only really popular story you've critiqued like that?

VagrantDust

@Cross-Warrior That sounds like a good idea. I really haven't had any problems with any other books aside from this one. Every once in a while, someone will say something to me on another story I critique, but nothing like this and not a year afterward.

I finally watched 10 Cloverfield Lane! It's such a relief to know I don't have to hide from spoilers anymore.

RavensFlyAway

@VagrantDust I felt the same way! The aliens were a surprise for me and I was thrown off by the jarring transition from a psychological thriller to your basic extraterrestrial sci-fi. I suppose that was to be expected by the title (Cloverfield is kind of an alien giveaway, tbh) but overall thought it was pretty decent. Nice to meet someone with a similar view!

Well, I hate to say, I had gotten a one word spoiler (aliens) before I had the chance to watch it, so it wasn't a surprise, but I'm kinda glad it wasn't because I think I would have hated to go from the very human thriller inside the shelter to a science fiction War of the Worlds type action without any warning. I braced myself for the aliens being a bad move. It still felt a little War of the Worlds-y and I half expected Tom Cruise to come running out of somewhere, but I liked that her character really followed through with her development, and her decision at the end to go toward the war instead of running away felt like it made the story complete and cohesive instead of two, smashed-together arcs.

@VagrantDust Just happened on your profile and LOVED your about section! Then saw this a second later — I know it's been a while, but what'd you think of the end?

You love Bollywood movies?

VagrantDust

@SlaySerene Well, when I was in college, my friends were studying film and they all took a Bollywood class. I leached off of them and learned a lot about Bollywood movies in general and we would watch the Dhoom movies together. But I can't say I really watch a lot of Bollywood. It's mostly just the Dhoom movies and a bunch of pieces of other Bollywood movies.
