Twitter was right. The Mario Galaxy movie really IS just references the movie.

            As a sequel to the first Mario Movie, then it's a serviceable film.
            
            As a Mario Galaxy ADAPTATION, it falls apart. Can hardly be considered a proper "Galaxy" movie.
