JORUNNA PARVA
Otherwise known as the deep sea bunny.
Have you ever wondered, is there a type of sea creature as cute as those fluffy bunnies? Well, the answer is yes. Although they aren’t classified as bunnies they do infact look like one, their looks are quite deceiving. They look so cute, with little rabbit ears. But infact, they are sea slugs. The animal in question? The deep sea bunny. That isn’t what it’s name exactly is, but it’s a common label given by social media to it for its bunny like appearance. It’s scientific name is Jorunna parva, given by Kikutaro Baba. And just a heads up, don’t be deceived by its cute appearance. Don’t try touching it, they’re actually toxic.
The appearance of the deep sea bunny is quite adorable, with those little ears and a fluffy tail. But, what they are isn’t truly a rabbit, a sea slug t be exact. The deep sea bunny usually measures at only one centimeter in length. How tiny, and how cute. But those little ears of its aren’t ears at all. They are rhinophores, which are sensory organs used for chemoreception. Give me a second to explain what chemoreception is. From its name, the word chemo appears, aka chemicals.it is the process of detecting chemicals, and reacting to it. That’s how to put it simply. Back to its appearance, the rhinophores are fuzzy, as they cover more surface area, so it’s easier to identify stimuli. They also have a lot of caryophyllidi, aka the mantle. They are used for sensory functions. They come in all sorts of different colors, yellow, brown, white. They usually come in dark yellow, but most photograph the white ones as they seem more clickbait-able.
