Hey, my lovelies! Just a quick reminder, since I’ve been getting a lot of comments lately:
Fanfiction cannot be monetised. Not by you, the author, or anyone else. If someone tries to charge you for art or services connected to your fanfiction—and you pay—you’re both breaking the law. Fanfiction uses copyrighted characters and worlds, so monetising it is copyright infringement. That can lead to lawsuits, bans from platforms like Wattpad, and account termination. The same goes for fanfiction about bands or real people—you cannot profit from it.
If you get comments like:
“I have a great idea after reading your work! Do you have another place we can discuss this?”
“Your chapter inspired me to create something I’d love to share. Can we talk elsewhere?”
That’s a red flag. Report it immediately. These commenters are likely trying to exploit you, turning your work into a transactional situation.
I fully support artists and creatives, but money cannot exchange hands when it comes to fanfiction. If someone is truly inspired, they can make fan art (with the author’s permission), but they cannot charge for it. Doing so is illegal, can result in lawsuits, permanent bans, and even IP address blacklisting. Platforms can and will hand over information to law enforcement if needed. The consequences are very real—both for the author who allows it and for the person asking.
As for me: I will report any such comments immediately. No questions, no conversation. I’ll provide Wattpad with direct links to both the comment and the user’s profile, including anything visible on their “Conversations” tab.
Stay safe, protect your work, and don’t let anyone exploit your creativity.
