Being a reader as much as a writer, I read a lot on here myself. And there is something I've noticed and that is the amount of badly written smut. So much so that I'm usually cringing so hard that I immediately put a story on my DNF list. I've done this for stories that are not...great in general or ones that are phenomenally written but then these scenes come out of nowhere and it lets the whole thing down. As a writer, who also writes smut in most of my stories, I'm not the best smutty writer out there. But I do try and write it well and tastefully. I've sat for hours writing and re-writing a smutty scene. Just to make sure I write it as well as I can. And if I still don't like it. I take it out completely and just don't include it. But I understand that some people may be only starting out and maybe have this idea of what smut is 'supposed' to be like. And how it's supposed to be written. This is not their fault, there is such a vast amount of badly written stuff that it seems to be the 'norm'. But believe it or not guys, it absolutely does not need to be written filthily or to be rife with 'shock value' or 'buzz' words. It also does not need porn-esque dialogue. If that's your thing, I'm all for it for you. But if it's not then it can be jarring and cause readers to do what I do and DNF a story. Or in some cases DNR it entirely. These musings have sent me down a path of wondering whether I should put together some sort of class or walkthrough for folks, on how to write smut decently. Something that is easy to follow, so even if you're new to writing this content, you can get something out of it. I dunno though...just my absent musings.
