Well, one major thing is write about something you like. If you are excited to write, it usually turns out better than if you don't really care. Also, try to really think of where your story is going. Don't just start something without thinking about the whole story, because your beginning may be awesome, but you need to make sure it stays awesome. Another good tip is to never give up. If you don't have that many readers at first, that is okay. Some people prefer to wait until the story is more developed to read, and some people just hate waiting for updates, so they wait until there are a lot of chapters.
