For a moment, there's an awkward moment of silence between us. I want to say something, anything, but the words escape me, and it seems like he's just as lost. I'm still trying to make sense of what just happened; I mean, it's not like it's never happened before, so why does it feel different this time? 
          
          His voice cuts through the quiet and says something that prompts me to turn my head to him in surprise.
          
          "What did you just say?!"
