@_Starfall1_ Desperate times call for desperate needs. As said in chapter three(I think), many of Crowley's rangers are old and should be retired if not the situation. They're going to be spread out thin amongst the fiefs, and it'd be hard to grasp their footing with so little of them. With that, there's really no time to waste. Halt already has all the necessary skill, and he did majority of his training under Pritchard. And as seen in future chapters, he'll prove himself. 
            
            Also, thanks for your input. I haven't thought about some of the things you mentioned.

But then again, Halt isn't a ranger. How are you going to get past the fact that Halt needs to have a few years under his bent before he can take on an apprentice. Unless you think that since the rangers are already outlaws, some rules are thrown out the window and as long as Halt has alot of skill, he could train an apprentice
