(1/2) Hey guys, I know I don't have many followers but I guess it's nice for people to know,

There's a thing going around on Instagram lately (I'm not sure if it's exclusively on Instagram, but that's where I've seen it), where brands, especially clothing and jewelry brands, are DMing small accounts with at least 1 selfie posted, telling them that they would like to offer them some of their products for free and post it so that this brand can post your pictures.

Now, free clothes and exposure sounds like a great deal, and it must be such an ego boost to receive a message like this. You're probably surprised to see that these brands have 15k+ followers, because you'd expect something like this to be a scam.

I'm not exactly going to tell you not to take the deal if you just fancy doing it, but I want to share why this is a shitty thing to do on the brand's part.

Usually when a brand wants to advertise their products on social media, they will hire scouts to find people to model their products. This process alone will cost the company money, to pay the scouts. Then, if they hire a model they will either pay them for their modelling work upfront, or they'll sign a contract for royalties.

But, someone must have discovered that they can easily exploit people without paying for scouts and without paying any actual models by contacting potentially talented but almost completely unnoticed people on Instagram on likely automated accounts, so that they can do all of that work for them, completely willingly because it looks like a great deal.

(2/2) No one is going to stop you from doing that deal with them, but if you are someone who is genuinely interested in modelling, I advise you sign up for an agent (there are a few websites for acting agents that work similarly to linkedin, I'm sure there must be modelling ones too), so you can work a way into the industry, and this is just as casual but you actually get paid and you actually get experience and credibility.

Unfortunately, no one is going to remember someone from a brand's Instagram account, no matter how many followers are on the account. If you are interested in any way in modelling, I assure you that Instagram followers are not your first priority right now--that comes later

So yeah, long message, but I just got reminded of this by a few videos about art competitions held by large companies (eg. Adobe) exploiting artists. So yeah, now you know. I guess share this with a friend if you think it's important, lol

Hey, sorry to all the people I accepted read for reads for, I've been really busy lately and unable to get through anything. I doubt I'll post anything for Chase the Ace soon, but when it does come out don't feel obliged to read it if you don't want to because I probably won't be able to return my end of the deal.

If you want, you can reply to this message and tell me the title of your book and I'll vote, since that's something that I definitely can return my side of the deal for. Sorry again that I can't give you guys feedback, you seem like really nice people and interesting writers, so I hope that my votes can help you get the exposure that you deserve ^^
