(1/2) Hey guys, I know I don't have many followers but I guess it's nice for people to know,
There's a thing going around on Instagram lately (I'm not sure if it's exclusively on Instagram, but that's where I've seen it), where brands, especially clothing and jewelry brands, are DMing small accounts with at least 1 selfie posted, telling them that they would like to offer them some of their products for free and post it so that this brand can post your pictures.
Now, free clothes and exposure sounds like a great deal, and it must be such an ego boost to receive a message like this. You're probably surprised to see that these brands have 15k+ followers, because you'd expect something like this to be a scam.
I'm not exactly going to tell you not to take the deal if you just fancy doing it, but I want to share why this is a shitty thing to do on the brand's part.
Usually when a brand wants to advertise their products on social media, they will hire scouts to find people to model their products. This process alone will cost the company money, to pay the scouts. Then, if they hire a model they will either pay them for their modelling work upfront, or they'll sign a contract for royalties.
But, someone must have discovered that they can easily exploit people without paying for scouts and without paying any actual models by contacting potentially talented but almost completely unnoticed people on Instagram on likely automated accounts, so that they can do all of that work for them, completely willingly because it looks like a great deal.
