so, this year's onc season is over again.

sadly, i couldn't finish my entry, though i was very optimistic in the beginning. while y'all were (probably) writing to meet that deadline, i had my very own uni deadline to fight the very same day yikes.

obviously, i still plan to finish "WHAT THE FLAMES CANNOT BURN" soon, so don't worry, but it makes me sad that it can't participate anymore. i hope you all had a better onc season this year.

          	did you finish and submit?

C_the_Dreamer

@_marmoris_
That's good at least and same ^^

It was the same for me, I just said "ok, I have enough words to submit, not enough time to find a better ending, let's just try and stop here"
          	   xD
I don't think so, it's really not that good, though @DistiWrites reminded me, that they only read the first 20K words anyway, if I don't make it further, they won't even see the half-assed ending. xD
          	  Thank you! <3

@C_the_Dreamer i am too! i was kinda proud of parts of it and had so much fun participating with this story

hmmmm... yeah i debated on trying it a similar way too. but there wouldn't have been a good chance to cut that shorter without it truly standing no chance. i am pretty sure it works better in your case. i wish you the best of luck for the judging period!

Even though I spent yesterday most of my time writing (I wrote 4,7K words!) and even reached 30K words in total, the story is far from being finished. x'D
Tonight and this morning I edited a few chapters and heavily debated on what to do.
Shortly before the submission form closed (a few minutes before 9 am), I decided to mark it complete and give it a go regardless.
I don't see high chances, but I would regret it, of I didn't even try. x'D
Now I can say I have the first part of the story finished. xD

So, short answer: I did not finish, but I submitted xD

LeNaAdine

Hi Marmoris,

I left you a follow because you speak words that resonate deeply with me! I wouldn't have had the courage to shout my opinion so straight out loud and even counter the arguments of Wattpad's employees for excluding honest writers who pour every ounce of their soul and emotions into their stories - while not doing anything against native English speakers who are lazily using AI to create their stories...

I mean - I am even hand-drawing my maps on Gimp! So noone has any right to compare me with those people who don't give a single s*** about honest, actual writing.

(Please tell me... Is my English really that bad that it merits a ban from the Wattys?! I mean... even while typing this, I didn't look up any vocabulary or grammar rules - so please feel free to judge my writing in this message.)

_marmoris_

@LeNaAdine Hi! Thank you so much. I'm glad I could voice some thoughts and grievances of others regarding the Wattys this year!

I fear the truth behind their reasoning might be that they want to reduce workload, and it's easier to program Wattpad to register eligibility in terms of possible translations, too, instead of having people look into the matters themselves. So, if the system notices something like that, people don't get the chance to enter in the first place, as those who don't fulfill the word count wouldn't. Ofc I could be totally wrong.

At least their responses showed a shocking bias against translation and second-language speakers, and that's a shame. Either way, this seems deeply unfair and not useful to prevent cheating at all, but only targets those transparent and honest about their work.

In any case, don't worry! As far as I can judge, your English is completely fine (I learned it from quite a young age, but I am not as qualified as a native). And even using some kind of help here and there wouldn't take away from it. Who doesn't use programs that help detect mistakes, like Word? Or even in their mother tongue, look up synonyms/exact definitions of words/whatever to polish writing? I am a first-language German speaker (like you, as it seems), and currently am working on my master's degree in German - still, I make typos I miss, sometimes learn a new word, or have to verify something using the "Regelwerk der deutschen Rechtschreibung", and I dare say... most of my fellow master students do. That's a part of learning and improving, and we can do that even in our mother tongue :)

to celebrate "WHAT THE FLAMES CANNOT BURN" making it to the round two qualifiers i published the new chapter. expect walls whispering, our priest despairing, and fresh horrors approaching at a fast pace!

...and let's enjoy this as long as it still lasts, because this year's onc is star-crossed for me. there is still so much to write plot-wise, and some uni deadlines might have just ruined my entire writing schedule for april. so there's that.

i hope it's going better for you! congratulations to everyone who qualified, and to all who did not: don't let this set you back.

a new chapter of "WHAT THE FLAMES CANNOT BURN" is out, and so, it's finally ready to be submitted to round 2!

which is, where the good news kinda end. i know it's becoming a habit but as motivated i was at the beginning of the contest, i realized i lack the time and energy with uni stuff and health issues going on to continue "THE HEARTS OF WILD BEASTS" for the onc as well. at this point, i'm glad if i manage to finish even one entry by the deadline.

but let me know how round 2 is going for you at the moment! (hopefully better than for me haha)

But I do have (or should have) a little over 9K words now. ;D
Though I still have to edit everything until then. x'D

A princess who lost everything at a young age (her family, her home, her kingdom and even more, almost her life >~<). You can read the beginning in "Kingdom of Ash". ;D
I'll continue writing it, just not during the challenge. ^^

Oh, I get that, it's the same for me with farm work. xD

crazy me did it and published the introductions to two entries for this year's onc!

✒ WHAT THE FLAMES CANNOT BURN
another story set in lasow, during the heat of midsummer where a young girl searching for the magical fern flower has a fateful encounter with a rusalka

✒ THE HEARTS OF WILD BEASTS
a little play on russian fairytales about dragons, in which our protagonist cursed to have no magic at all finds a dragon in her garden who is said to eat women's hearts

are you participating? have you already posted your entry?

C_the_Dreamer

            I'm excited for both! ;D

          I'm so thankful and happy.

As for the ONC I'm pondering on too many possible entries at the moment, and am still quite conflicted.

As you know I'd love to read 4 from you and I can only encourage you to write two stories. ;D

@C_the_Dreamer It's really hard. As for now I feel 3 might not be developed enough for a novella that length. I'm most motivated for 1 and 4...and honestly wondet if I should try two entries after all :'D

So my pick would be 4 (of course), I really like your idea, it's not just the Prompt. ;D
The second one would be 3. ^-^
            Then 2 and 1 xD

it's onc season again, and oh boy am i conflicted what to write and if i even should participate (even though I definitely want to!)

are you participating this year? have you already found your perfect prompt? let me know!

C_the_Dreamer

@_marmoris_
I totally get that! That why specifically for the ONC I won't pick anything I have to research, that's my number one rule. I'll still research some things, but nothing grand like history things or I'll end up stuck in a rabbit hole. x'D

_marmoris_

@C_the_Dreamer Technically, perhaps I could've finished more than one, too. But "Those Who Hunger" takes extensive research and that was just not possible. Plus, I feel like at some point quality might be suffer from the attempt, and I have so much other things to do as well ^^"

Yes, they do, but I'm rapidly going through my ideas and cutting some away. xD
I get that. I know that I can finish 3 stories if I want to (last year it only didn't work with the third because it got too long because I focused on other characters too much and it was a slow slow romance x'D)
But that doesn't mean everyone can or should.
If I didn't like writing different stories so much and if there weren't so many challenges at the same time, I would focus on one story too. ^^"

THE WORDS WE BURN made it to the longlist!
honestly, i wasn't so sure about it and still don't know how far it will come. so, keep your fingers crossed it'll get on the shortlist as well!

as for the meantime: i'm already editing TWWB in the background, giving a few scenes more time to breathe and perhaps adding in a tiny subplot.
on the other hand, WHAT DEATH CANNOT TOUCH should soon be finished, and i also didn't forget THOSE WHO HUNGER which i want to finish as well. maybe one or more stories will make it to participate in the wattys. let's try. i'm motivated but for many reasons this motivation is fragile at the moment. wish me luck it sticks with me

C_the_Dreamer

@_marmoris_  @Chaoskuss
I didn't know either how the Wattys work until recently, but there are books with all the informationen that really help!
Look into "The Wattys 2025" and "Road to the Wattys 2025", you'll find them first thing in my reading lists too. ;D

Yes, life just throws you around sometimes that when you finally have time to breathe, you are just too exhausted to read or need a comfort read, at least in my case. x'D
It depends on my mind and mood though, sometimes I don't care at all if someone is brutally murdered orher times I get sick at the implication that something could happen, it's so weird. x'D
