Aghhhh... I've been so inactive recently. Anyways, today's date marks the first day of "Kindness Week", a week where the school I attend promotes the idea of kindness and compassion.
Steve Maroboli, an American writer, once said, "A kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal." Compassion. Compassion is something I've struggled with through all of my life. As a generally loud spoken person I tend to struggle with showing kindness to others. I mean, some people are naturally kind to others and there are some people who have to train themselves to say “good morning” to people everyday. But as I learned to show more compassion and kindness, I’ve realized that it affects other people, it gives them something to smile about. When you acknowledge other people and their feelings, it makes them feel special, it makes them feel loved. Kindness is something we’re all capable of, we all just have to be willing to express that, to show the people around you that you truly care.
So in honor of "Kindness Week", I ask you to do three simple things each day:
1. Sandy Hook Promise's "Start With Hello"- don't just walk by everyone as you enter a building, say hello and take into consideration the feelings of others and how you may be affecting their lives in a positive way.
2. Thank Someone- show how grateful you are for a person whether their close family who have stuck by you through everything or a complete stranger who helped you pick up your pencil in your local Starbucks.
3. Appreciate- appreciate what you have in life and think about what you can do to help the people around us who might be less fortunate.
