What's the most insane/absurd conspiracy theory you've come across?
Something I'm not sure how to feel about is that I am extremely good at adapting myself to any situation intuitively. I'm not just talking about things like e.g. formal vs. informal speech but about everything from body language to speech patterns/voice register/vocabulary to facial expressions to picking up on and switching between accents.
Can people please stop romanticising and normalising obsessive/controlling behaviour in relationships?
What is your favourite food from your own culture, and what is your favourite food from another culture? What do you like about these foods?
"Never play carefully."
— William Primrose (1904-1982), violist.
There is context, but out of context it's funny because viola jokes.
(Said context: He told a student that he'd prefer if she missed with confidence rather than played the right thing with hesitation. I.e. you need to sell your performance regardless of whether it's perfect. He also said in an interview that women can be as good at playing the viola as men because while they might be less likely to have advantageous physical attributes—as in, long arms and large hands—they have a superior mind and more determination.)
Fun fact: Primrose actually studied violin, but later admitted that he skipped many classes because the violin didn't interest him.
I am transitioning from violin to viola :)
(Very funny, I know.)
@MonteCristoDonut I think they're equally difficult though, technically, but in different ways
@MonteCristoDonut It is actually quite different. You need to press harder on the strings with your fingers (especially in higher positions as the strings aren't as close to the fingerboard) and it feels different as the strings are thicker, and it's harder to make them respond as well (i.e. you need considerably better bow technique to get the same tone quality as on the violin*), chords and double stops are more difficult if you have smaller hands because the distance between where you place your fingers is larger and the strings are also further apart. On the other hand, it's a little bit more forgiving with intonation especially if you have a larger viola. Viola sizes were never standardised so a 'full-size' viola's body (excluding the neck) can measure 38-46cm (on average 41cm) while a 4/4 violin's body is standardised at 35cm. Reading the clef is the easiest part in my opinion because you can read it like you'd read 3rd position on the violin. *"Violinists can get away with almost everything." — William Primrose, violist who started out playing the violin, talking about the difference in bowing technique between violin and viola. I'd actually agree there.
@ahcdefg :O I‘ve always wanted to try out viola to as a Violinist, I reckon it isn’t that difficult / different except you have to learn to read the clef… how is it?
