Hello! I thought I might drop by and continue the conversation here! Pleasure to meet you and thanks for following.
          
          Please do by all means read more Murakami novels, amazing stuff! I prefer his magical realism and complex experiences like in that of Kafka on the Shore, Wind Up Bird Chronicle among others! Wild Sheep Chase and Sputnik sweetheart are smaller lighter novels which were some of my favourite too :)
          
          Your bear story also reminds me of Bears of Nametoko by Miyazawa Kenji. Your writing style is full of poise and confidence. Wonderful work, truly. It's rare to find people who write Japanese style literary fiction; glad I came across your account. Congrats on all the publishing opportunities so far. The Lit Fic network also has various things going on like reading lists, featured reads, starting up a short story anthology, so we will get your work on the account and let me know if you have any short story work you'd like on the anthology!
          
          Do share about your teaching experiences if you have time. I often visit Japan but mainly Tokyo. I'm going this December actually. Might be looking at teaching after I finish the rest of my degree. But at the same time I almost hope I'll be busy enough with my writing that I'd have to reconsider lol!

            Haven't worked out when my next visit to Japan will be. Hopefully some time next year.
            
            My Japanese is sadly out of practice. It is on the long list of things to do again, but writing is taking the priority at the moment. :-)

@aidancdoyle  Awesome! The oxford book is edited by my professor, who's one of Murakami's translators :) we also study those short stories which are all prominent Japanese literary figures. Great read
            
            That sounds wonderful. I have yet to go to Osaka, I may be going this December for a quick visit. When will your next visit be? I study English Literature and Creative Writing - but also Japanese literature and language occasionally. Is your Japanese language in practice? Haha

            I didn't know Bears of Nametoko. Just ordered a copy of the Oxford book of Japanese Stories, which includes the story.
            
            Terry Bisson's Bears Discover Fire is one of my favorite short stories.

            I write a variety of things, mainly sf and fantasy. Plus kids' stories as well, so not always on the literary end of the spectrum. :-)

            I left Japan at the end of 2008, but I've been back just about every year since then to visit friends. I lived in Osaka, which is a great city.
            
            What degree are you studying? Hope you have a fun time in Tokyo!
