He married his childhood sweetheart, Benilda de la Pena (nee Dongjuangco) in 1962 and had three children, David Lester, Junjun, and Rachelle, and seven grandchildren, Xyrelle, Joseph Bryan, Luzamindria, Jhonray, Arturo Fortunato (affectionately known as Bobong), Lovelygirl and Bea. He passed away peacefully from complications of stomach cancer shortly after hearing about the birth of his great-grandson, Taehyung."
