Raised in Southern California in a middle-class, first-generation Chinese American family, Albert was deeply influenced by a blend of cultural values and a strong emphasis on education. These early experiences shaped his pursuit of a medical career, beginning with his undergraduate education at the University of California, Irvine, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. Seeking to expand his medical expertise, he attended St. George's University School of Medicine in Grenada, West Indies.

During his residency at Tufts - New England Medical Center in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Dr. Lai focused intensely on developing non-pharmacological approaches to chronic pain. This passion would define much of his career. His exemplary performance and innovative approach to treatment earned him the position of Chief Resident, allowing him to explore further and refine his methods in pain management.

Following his residency, Albert transitioned to private practice, aligning with Desert Pain Specialists in Rancho Mirage and the Centers of Rehabilitation and Pain Medicine in Placentia. In these roles, he was instrumental in pioneering comprehensive rehabilitation programs that have been widely recognized for their effectiveness in treating diverse pain conditions. His expertise in neuromusculoskeletal disorders and electrodiagnostic has set him apart as a leader in his field.
