I wish I could say that I am an insanely popular author and that I have all the answers to success, but I am not, and I don't. However, I do admit that a couple of my stories have done moderately well and I would be happy to share a few things that I have done that I believe have contributed to this.
1. Write correctly.
Now I don't mean that you have to be the next C.S. Lewis, or J.K. Rowling. I mean that you should do everything in your power to bring your writing to the highest point of quality you can. In other words, spell words correctly, make an effort to eliminate punctuation errors, don't over use adverbs and adjectives, use strong descriptive words, keep simple dialogue tags, etc. One of the first things a reader notices is the quality of the work. I have put down (or exited from) many books because of the amount of spelling and grammar errors. If nothing else, do this.
2. Have a balance.
Maintaining an interesting balance of description and dialogue is probably the most professional thing that one can do. Having a story that is mainly dialogue not only prevents the reader from really visualizing the story, but it also really cuts down on length which most people aren't huge fans of. Having too much description is a sign of amateurs and looks too desperate, as if they are trying to be someone they are not, or as if they are trying to be romantic or poetic to an excessive and obnoxious amount. Having a good balance ensures that the reader is immersed in the story while not overly boring them.
