penelope pressed a palm against her chest , feeling the steady , rapid thump of her heart against her ribs as the adrenaline slowly ebbed away . she glanced at the arrow embedded nearby , its fletching still quivering slightly from the force of the impact , before turning her gaze toward the apologetic archer . a faint flush of color returned to her cheeks , and she let out a breath that was part relief and part disbelief at how narrowly she'd escaped being pinned to the woodwork . she reached up to ensure her necklace was still centered , her fingers steady as she offered a small , crooked grin to signal she was unhurt . ❛ i suppose i can forgive the fright , seeing as i’m still in one piece . ❜ she brushed a stray lock of hair from her face , her eyes glinting with a mix of humor and lingering surprise . ❛ but maybe we could aim for the straw targets next time ? i think my heart has had enough excitement for one afternoon ... unless you’re trying to keep me on my toes on purpose . ❜
