Quite unbelievably, it was the Brits who created the word 'soccer.' It originated from the '-soc-' in 'association' in 'association football'. So, 'soc' + 'er' (-er was a popular suffix in those days)= soccer.
This name was created because there were some variations of football— Association Football, Rugby Football, etc. And probably, in order to distinguish them without having to use a lot of syllables, words like soccer and rugger were created.
The unfortunate thing is that a sport played with nearly zero foot-and-ball contact is being called football by most of the people of one of the most populous and influential countries in the world, while the true football is called soccer by them.
