In the fourth grade, my dad told me about the British Raj. A 200 period of rule over the modern day nations of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. This single conversation ignited within me a love for history. To know the past.
          
          During this period, the Indian Subcontinent was looted of money, culture and traditions. People faced oppression, famines, economic exploitation and racial discrimination. And even today India works towards reversing the effects of colonialism. Of our nation and of our minds.  
          
          Despite being born and raised in Canada, the sacrifices of freedom fighters have always filled me with pride. Fighters like Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Rani Lakshmibai, Kanaklata Barua, Tiruppur Kumaran, Bhagat Singh, Usha Mehta and so so many more who deserve the same amount of recognition the Gandhiji gets worldwide. They fought so Bharat could fly its flag high in the air. They fought so we could sing Vande Mataram freely. 
          
          I may be born and raised in Canada but no one can ever strip away the pride I feel when I call myself ek Bharat ki Beti!!! And I do agree that Bharat isn't perfect. It is a work in progress. Like every other nation on this planet, India is still growing day by day. But it also important to remember that India has grown. The India of today is not the India my parents left. It is not the India I visited in 2009. Neither is it the one I visited in 2018. So yes, India does deserve to be celebrated proudly even if it is not perfect. So to the anti-nationals, get lost! 
          
          This is to the freedom fighters of India. All of them. Big or little. Well known or lost somewhere in the history books. They all played a huge role in India's azaadi. 
          
          Happy 80th Independence Day!!! May we remember the sacrifices of the freedom fighters and the many lives lost during the partition. And lastly may India continue to grow and flourish beautifully everyday!!!

@caraagggtm Ur completely correct! Why on all days do people choose the literal Independence day to points out the issues in India . I want to also just add that if India were still ruled by the British or if it were being run by a dictatorship than most chances would be that everyone who was at the jantar mantar would have been put in jail rather than listened to. And Modiji didn’t even take action against the students who verbally abused him and his mother. If this is a supposed dictatorship than what the hell is a democratic nation?

@average_desi_bitch On independence day , my whole fyp was filled with people saying that 'Is India really independent?' 
            Everyone knows India is not perfect. These people have 363 other days to point out the differences and issues with our country, so why does it only come to January 26 and August 15 when people point out that our country is not independent.
            Hate the system , not the country.

I respect Sonam Wangchuk and all the work he has done. But I do not support a man who is an anti-national. I stand the students. I stand with India. The hunger strike that once started off as a protest for the NEET exams is no longer even about the NEET exams. This protest is not a place to spread anti-national,  anti-hindu or anti-BJP slogans. But alas, that is what it has become. And I am deeply saddened by this. I am for the government taking accountability for these paper leaks but I will not support such groups or people who spread such slogans and hatred in the name of protest. I am sorry if this offends anyone, but I believe this needs to be said. JAI HIND!!! BHARAT MATA KI JAI!!

@caraagggtm !!!THIS EDUCATION MINISTER!!! How dare he have the nerve to claim that girls don't have the right to stay home!! Screw him!!! 
            
            On the topic of CJP and Sonam Wangchuk, I fear they may have used the students and the parents of said students to gather a group and instead of protesting for the NEET leaks, they are using this to spread their own agenda. And that is truly tragic. Students have killed themselves. And they are using this to say shit about Article 340, and other anti-national rhetoric. WHAT PLACE DOES RAM BHAGWAN HAVE IN THE NEET?? WHAT DOES ARTICLE 340?? However, I am happy to see that Modi ji seems to be taking action finally!! But other than that, this is truly tragic on multiple levels, and I just feel so so disappointed.

Canadian. I take this title with a grain of salt. Honestly, I do not even know if I truly deserve it. I am a Canadian. Born and raised, but the most inherently Canadian thing about me is my accent. But even that is more American than Canadian. I search my mind for the words of the national anthem. The words foreign in my mouth as if I have not grown up singing the lyrics at school with pride. This country has given me opportunities and privileges I would not have had without the sacrifices of my parents. Gave me stability. So who am I really without Canada. Maybe this is my way of acknowledging this part of my identity. The one that never fails to make me the slightest bit uncomfortable. Because I know this part of me exists but I rarely ever feel "Canadian". So maybe this Canada Day I'll start by voicing this discomfort. Because calling myself a Canadian does not make me any less Indian. It just makes me whole. 
          
          Happy Canada Day!!
