I just had a thought while I was reading a fanfic where Dumbledore made Sirius go to Azkaban. What if the cruciatus curse isn't what left the Longbottom's in a coma, what if the cruciatus only leaves people insane and with nerve damage, what if the reason the Longbottom's are in a coma is because Alice is Harry godmother and Dumbledore wanted Harry to be abused by the Dursley and so he arranged for the Longbottom's to be given the draught of the living dead or something.
