*Chapter Nine*
The door was locked.
3 teachers. 2 of us. 1 record book on the table with *Ada. Blessing.* written in red.
Mr. Daniels picked up a key from his pocket. "You should have just written BECE and left," he said. "Now you’re making this messy."
"Messy?" Emeka shouted. "4 students disappeared last year! You called them runaways!"
Mrs. Okoro sighed. "It’s tradition. JSS3 must have sacrifice for good BECE results. The school has done it for 10 years. No one asks questions."
The third teacher, the deep voice, moved toward us. "Give us the phone," he said to me. "The one with the messages."
I didn’t. I threw it at the window instead. _CRASH._
Alarm started blaring. The whole school.
Emeka grabbed the record book and ran to the door. Kicked it. Once. Twice.
On the third kick it opened. Someone outside had heard the alarm.
It was the security man. And behind him, Ada, Peace, and Blessing.
With police.
Turns out Peace had called her uncle, a DPO, the minute we left her house.
"Don’t move," he said, pointing at the teachers.
Within 5 minutes, the staff room was full of people.
The record book had 20 names. 20 "runaways" in 10 years.
All during BECE week. All signed by the same 3 teachers.
As they were being handcuffed, Mr. Daniels looked at me and said:
"You ruined the best results this school ever had."
I just stared. "You ruined lives."
