Today I'll recommend an absolutely hilarious fantasy romance! 'How to poison your husband' by @SophieKestrel follows Ivelle Delaville, a carpenter whose carpentry business isn't doing so well. To stay afloat financially, she starts a husband-poisoning side hustle (she has experience with that, after all). She soon gets hired to poison Eirifold, an evil prince, which shouldn't be so hard. Except for the part where it absolutely is.

This story may not take itself too seriously, but Ivelle and Eirifold's journey will stay with you for a long time, anyway! Go check it out!

I'm here to recommend another great queer read! 'Charlie' by @pixelmum follows sixteen-year-old Cas and his shy artist best friend Vish, an inseparable pair that couldn't be more different yet has feelings for each other that run deep. They're used to spending their summers hanging out at a secret wetland in the Fens, where Cas swims and Vish paints the wildlife he holds dear. But when they start uncovering a dark, ancient presence tied to the marsh and Vish's predatory 'imaginary' friend Charlie, their bond and their lives are threatened like never before.

Trust me, queer teen romance and cosmic horror are a singularly awesome mix. Don't miss this ONC entry!

In 1980s suburban America, Rosie McGee has just moved into the good christian Windsor Lane with her brand-new husband, who seems hellbent on ignoring her and shows her no interest whatsoever. Rosie turns to her neighbour Scarlett, a woman with a poor reputation as the local seductress, for help. Scarlett agrees to help Rosie if Rosie is willing to model for a painting. But when their agreement leads to attraction neither of them saw coming, both women may be getting more than they bargained for.

"Windsor Lane" by @spelunkadunk features a sweet, 'scandalous' lesbian romance between two characters you'll love to root for! Go give it a read!

In 'Where the Sakura Bloom' by @MarCafeWrites, three English siblings (Colin, Madeline and Brian Evans) accidentally end up in a mythical land called Makoto when they go through a misplaced door while exploring their ailing grandfather's estate. They meet two young samurai, the siblings Shin and Min, and hit it off with them. However, Makoto's beauty and mystery have a dark side to it, as Shin and Min soon reveal their legendary land is oppressed by a sinister power referred to as the Shogun. When Min is captured by the Shogun's raiders, Shin and the Evans children set out to free not only her, but the entirety of Makoto.

'Heart of Sparrow' by @addison_sweet starts with teenage Sparrow Winslow finding a picture of her late mother with Falcon Russo, a crooked businessman she suspects may be her father. Upon tracking him down, she learns more than she bargained for: her father is a vampire and her mother was a witch who stole an African goddess's heart in order to have a child with him. Sparrow's heart must be returned to the goddess, but it soon makes her a prime target among supernatural communities who all covet it for their own purposes. Can Sparrow survive and succeed in her mission with newfound friends, family and magic by her side?

This paranormal fantasy YA has a diverse and engaging cast of characters, a unique basis in African (Yoruba) lore, and plenty of heart (;D). Go give it a try!

'Flight Risk' by @Voyageavecmoi follows Audrey, an asexual travel-loving dive instructor from Canada, and Australian environmental scientist Caleb, who discover they're travelling to the same wedding while seated next to each other on a flight. They hit it off and, to avoid having to confront their personal past and present issues in front of family and old friends, agree to be in a fake relationship for the wedding. It's supposed to be a temporary arrangement, but Audrey and Caleb just might discover they like each other a little too much.

This story is an engaging and adventurous travel romance with ace rep, original spins on tried-and-true tropes, and a heartwarming slowburn relationship between two characters who have both been through a lot. Don't hesitate to join Audrey and Caleb on their journey!

'A Mischievous Tale of Magical Mayhem' by @KaiddanceAndOwliecat (the joint account of @Kaiddance and @Owliecat—surprising, huh?) follows half-elf Tallon and not-quite-human thief Ben on an epic fantasy adventure full of... Well, magical mayhem! Crossing paths in the lovely backwater town of Ballsdeep, Tallon and Ben soon find themselves facing deadly conspiracies, dangerous situations and a charming cast of wacky characters, friends and foes alike. As their bond grows and journey progresses, they might just find love and family somewhere along the way.

It's February 1st and the ONC prompts are out! I've been participating in every ONC since 2019, so this is normally one of my favourite days of the year.

However, this year I'm making the choice to sit it out. I'm in the final stages of getting my Master's degree, working three jobs, and hoping to move out as soon as an opportunity presents itself, so adding writing a novella under time pressure to that workload will be the death of me.

Therefore, I'll focus on writing the sequel to #FF offline at my leisure for now, but I will definitely be around to read and support some of the entries people come up with! Happy ONC, everyone!

@bigfivedonaldduckfan At the moment, I am more than happy to keep writing in Dutch. It means I'm (finally!) finishing stories and that is more important to me now than a potential bigger audience. Thank you for your encouragement!

bigfivedonaldduckfan

@AnneVilssen I encourage you to try! You'd likely be able to potentially reach a bigger audience that way. I bet a smaller, more close-knit Dutch audience has its benefits too, though!

@bigfivedonaldduckfan It still is nice! Even though our version is not official anymore, the spirits are still up and that's a good thing. But you know, it always is a bit nicer when you're able to go along with the 'big ones'. Maybe I should consider writing in English one day...
