since i’ve been a part of the maze runner fandom for quite some time now, i thought it was important to clarify some things that have come to my attention.

yes, newt is canonically gay. james dashner confirmed it on twitter. this series is his not ours, and however he portrays the characters is rightfully how we should too.

no, it not okay to continue writing newt x fem!oc books. i myself have written him with a fem!oc of my own before, this having obviously been previous to his sexuality reveal. if i still had the book up (it is long deleted at this point) it would be gone in a snap of my fingers. now i’m not saying that books like this written previously should all be deleted — that’s just how i personally would go about it with my book. i just find that no more fem!oc books should be written, and that if possible could only be altered to a male!oc instead. i know most members of the fandom have fawned and favored newt, but he is still no different than the original character we all loved. he has always been gay, it just hadn’t been unveiled until now. he is still the character we all fell in love with for his personality and story — that has not changed. invalidating his sexuality is something no one should be doing. he does not like women and, as harsh yet true as it may sound, he would not be attracted to your fem!oc. i love newt so much. i have found myself crushing on him in the past (have since gotten over so). i am so, so happy that he is able to represent the LQBTQ+ community, and he will forever and always continue to be my favorite character.

@-rhapsodies exactly, thank you!! the only interpretation of newt we should rightfully refer to is james dashner’s. we as a fandom shouldn’t ignore this reveal (which is so, so great!) but instead embrace it wholeheartedly! i agree that it would be completely wrong to invalidate a character of any sexuality’s feelings. they will love who they love based on attraction and chemistry, not who we forcefully place them with. and we should always respect their label, continuing to endlessly love them for who they are.
