Kollam or Quilon, an old harbor town on the Arabian coast, stands on the Ashtamudi lake. Kollam, the former Desinganadu, had maintained a commercial reputation from the days of the Phoenicians and the Romans. The Chinese trade fed them. Historically Kollam has been the hub of large and medium public sector enterprises.
