cut to jay being twenty—   and when he was only starting to get used to the whole "family business,"  jay was attacked by a vampire  ..  (yes, a vampire) and to ensure his survival—jay's mother struck up a deal with the vampire and his people and sacrificed her own life for his life.  though, that came with a catch   ..   jay was resurrected but paid the ultimate price of being ONE OF THEM.  a bloodsucker.  
            
            ...and hiding his true identity from his father and other vampire hunters.

[...]  before he was born,   jay's entire family has always been the protectors of their town,    so to speak.  always keeping one step ahead of vampires,  werewolves    &   any other supernatural beast that may pose a threat to the town.   
            
            when jay was six,  a vampire had almost taken his life—but luckily his father (with his skills)  had easily taken the monster down.  from there on,  his own dad became more bellbent on ensuring that no monster would pose a threat to his own blood   &   others that lived in their small town.
