"Why're you so nice to me?" The question slipped out before I could stop it, raw and unfiltered.

Johnny's gaze held steady, unwavering. "I don't know. You make me want to be—"

"Better?" A bitter laugh escaped, and I looked away, but he didn't let go. His hand stayed, solid and steady, grounding me.

"More. You make me want to be more."

My breath caught, his words hanging in the air between us, simple yet weighted with something I couldn't quite name. More. He wasn't trying to fix me, or fix himself—he was just trying, as if being with me was enough of a reason to want something better.

His hand was still over mine, the warmth of it settling me in a way I wasn't used to. For once, I didn't pull away. I stayed there, feeling the steady beat of his pulse against my skin.

I glanced at him, barely able to keep my voice steady. "You don't know me."

He tilted his head, his gaze never wavering. "Maybe. But I don't think you know you, either."
