No offense, but…
The culture between reader and writer here on Wattpad is super freaking weird.
Readers just fawn over certain writers here and just validate anything and everything they say. Even if it’s kind fucked up.
Some writers here seem… spiteful. If you ask them about updating a fic, they get angry. I see announcements where they say they blocked someone for asking. Sometimes they even remove the story because too many people are asking.
And don’t get me wrong - everyone has the right to block/remove followers/content if they’re uncomfortable - but doesn’t this mean people are just enjoying your hard work?
I get that repetitive asks/comments can be a drag, but really? It feels spiteful.
I used to post my own fanfics back in the heyday of ff.net (I know - I’m an OLD) in a fandom with a lot of engagement at the time. I got a lot of messages/comments back then, but I never took offense like Wattpad writers seem to. I never took down stories to spite followers, or blocked them because I was annoyed. I absolutely blocked some for harassment, shit-commenting.
Am I just old for finding this pattern exhausting?
Admittedly I spent a lot of time on FF.net, and usually go to AO3 now (better filtering).
I know I could unfollow some of them, but they are genuinely talented writers. I’m only following one now in hopes they put a story back up and finish it.
