            a  curious  tilt  of  meursault’s  head,  though  his  expression  remains  mostly  neutral;  neither  taking  offense  nor  compliment.  it’s  seemingly  become  the  default  for  him  now  since  maman’s  passing⸻he  finds  it  inconvenient  for  others  to  misinterpret  his  emotions,  or  lack  thereof,  based  on  his  facial  expressions.

            meursault  blinks  at  the  gifts  outstretched  to  him.  how  did  don  quixote  even  know  it  was  his  birthday  today?  he  never  mentioned  it  before,  never  had  a  reason  to.  perhaps  she  had  heard  from  the  executive  manager,  but  even  then,  meursault  does  not  recall  any  rule  stating  that  such  information  needed  to  be  divulged  to  the  others.
            
            
            he  reaches  out  and  picks  up  one  of  the  cupcakes.  without  preamble,  his  teeth  sink  into  the  delicacy⸻well,  it’s  better  than  the  “chicken”  don  quixote  made  at  eunbong’s,  but  perhaps  it’s  because  these  were  bought  from  an  actual  pastry  shop.
