it is INSTRUMENTAL that you have the right soundtrack for a longfic. not a physical book, but scrolling with non-serif text against a white background (or dark mode, if that’s your thing.)
take as much time as you need picking it. go with your gut. a personal tip of mine is to play on the conflict/plot of the fic. tone is important, but most can be tonally adjusted!!
when i read Double Take, a gameshow/dating show fic with fade-to-black and rarepairs galore, my soundtrack of choice was Peaches and Cream by 112. it’s not my usual style, but that’s sometimes necessary!!!
this occurred to me because i have You Bet Your Life from Last Life: The Musical on right now for a longfic with a premise of a “deal.” but again, tone! you could pick Deal With Destiny, or The Other Side, but i wanted something a bit… precarious.

One thing I’ve started experimenting with on one fic I’m writing is including a link to a video playing the music I’ve chosen for that character along with the name and composer (I choose instrumental songs so people can’t be distracted by lyrics). While I don’t think anyone actually listens to the songs, I have so much fun looking for songs that perfectly match the mood of that chapter, especially if it’s not a very well known song so that more people can be introduced to it.

staring at myself in the mirror of the coffee shop washroom as i realize i did in fact hit a verse in fast as you can by fiona apple. new goal: make that song palatable for a performance. anyways go listen to love ridden if youve ever doubted yourself.
okay, I can sing the basics of the melody! however words, polishing, and quoting are always the harder part, especially with a song like this and the nature of her drawl. but good news I am getting progress on that shakiness in the “for” (the line is: and for a little while more, I’ll soar the uneven wind / complain and blame the sterile land) and that should be the most vocally challenging part
