Your finished work is pretty good, and I think it is wise to leave the ending there. I am curious to see what else you can do.
PM me for a story idea on the theme of fake soul mates, escaping from abuse not only physically but mentally. There are a lot of stories about dominant makes being so attractive, but not much about making the distinction between that and abuse.
The main character has been scarred by a dark past. When she meets the real love that seems destined for her, she sees similarities with the man who abused her.
They are both dominant, assertive, strong... and fall for her too hard, too fast to be normal. What are the real warning signs of abuse, and will she miss (or missunderstand) the differences between them?
For writing realistic bad guy characters I recommend reading The Gift of Fear by Gavin DeBecker. He covers the topic of human violence and the related psychology and warning signs well. You can do other research specific to the topic as well.
