i might sound stupid but what are “ghost readers” and why do people hate that?

@s-starryknight the thing that bothers me is i loveeeee to see people’s reactions to my story so when someone comments it’s really motivating!!

@clvbheaven hey I've never rlly understood why ppl hate them either it's like sure it's nice to have votes/comments as validation but I've never personally felt dependent on other people's opinions on my fanfics or other bits that I get worried abt ghost readers, obvi that's not how everyone thinks or else we wouldn't get posts like "if I don't get x amount of votes I won't publish the next part of the story" (imo it's fanfic, it's self indulgence not a job?) but like it'd fine if ppl disagree with that
