Well...first of all it's easier to write a story in the genre that you like to read. So you could take inspiration from past books you've read in that particular genre, but you'll need to add your own spin on the ideas. The one thing to remember if you're going to write something is that nothing is original; it's all based off something, it's just presented in a different way that sounds new. I'm no expert at all, but I hope that my advice will help you. If you need more help in the future, feel free to ask! I would be glad to help out!
