He specializes in defense and other destructive spells, even though he knows how to hold his own, he would rather let anything else happen, rather than hurt someone else. Even in the name of protecting himself. And in the event that he were to ever hurt someone, it might be inbehind someone he loves. But even then, his anger might be misdirected afterwards. He would despise them for him having to resort to such means, and he would hate himself for doing it.
