"I don't know what to do!" he exclaimed petulantly — because that's what he was. a child , too young to understand everything despite the life experiences he's had. "it's like — like you pretend I'm not even / here /. I'm trying to be good , I promise! I just — I don't know what I did wrong .. "

instinctually , he leaned into the touch. he wouldn't cry — he tried not to do that around camila anymore. it made her sad. a frown did make its way onto his face though. "promise?" he questioned in a whisper. quiet , fragile — as if voicing it too loud would prevent the answer he desired.
ID. @hydrasldr- [camila's eyes filled with sympathy, and she gently held his face in her hands.] despite anything that may happen, i'll always be your mom. okay?
"it's not that I don't want it! it's just that — I don't .. know what ice cream / is /. "
ID. @hydrasldr- it's, uh.. well first of all, it's a sweet treat, really good. it's some kind of mix of dairy and sugar and flavoring, and sometimes something else in it, like fruits or brownies or something. you can make an ice cream flavor out of pretty much anything; really good stuff, trust me.
"could you help me put up my hair? it's gotten long and — you make ponytails seem easier than they are."
tiea was quick to lean into the touch. in the past , he would have flinched away from it. now? it was practically painful to stay away from her comfort. it was almost amusing. how it was now an instinct to lean into contact , when once his instinct was to avoid it. "still. don't have to talk about it right now. I just got you .. don't wanna think about losing you." he admitted quietly. "so — can we just start with you trimming it? and then a stylist .. after I get used to it."
ID. @hydrasldr- [her features softened, and she cupped his face; she never meant to make him panic.] yea, hey, i'm here, and i'm gonna be here for a loooooong time. but even then, there'll come a time where you've gotta start doing things on your own, and live on your own. i've gotta help teach you some independence, that's all.
a brief look of panic flashed over his features. now that she had finished he turned around to look at her. a deep frown had settled on his face — something he didn't try to hide. "but you're here now. you're here , with me. don't .. don't say things like that."

"but will you .. ?" he questioned in a quiet tone. at this point he had given up on trying to hold off the tears. instead using his hands to grip at his shirt — right over his heart. it hurt. everything / hurt /. "you — you're not okay. anyone can see it. you're .. " broken , tired , drained .. " — sad. I just .. " and it was so selfish to continuously think of himself. everything wasn't about him , he knew that , but .. " — I miss when we were a family. I miss .. you."
ID. @hydrasldr- tiea, please.. it's not that. i swear to you it's not that. [it tore her apart to think about, but she couldn't blame him for thinking like he did. if she were him, she'd be feeling the same things. which definitely made all of this /so/ much worse.] there's not really a textbook on how to do this. how to be a mom again after you lost your kid for five years. and you're at such a formative age, which just makes it all worse for us.. [she sighed, tears now in her eyes.] i'm failing you, i know i am. and i'm sorry. i'll do better for you.
"that's not my fault!" his voice was louder than it should be. usually , he would freeze a bit , maybe apologize if it was a bad day. being loud wasn't what he was made for. tiea was trained to sit quietly and listen , not voice complaints — especially ones focused on his own feelings. "it was five years for you , but no time had passed for me! I just came back and — and suddenly I didn't have a mom anymore!" he moved a hand to wipe stubbornly at his eyes , catching the tears before they could fall. "why am I not enough anymore .. ?"
