Part 2: Almost 13, Still Holding On
It was June 3rd. Dania was turning 13 on July 25. She should’ve been excited — but her heart was stuck somewhere in February 6.
That was the day he turned 14. Darwish. The boy she still couldn’t forget.
Now in boarding school, far from everything familiar, Dania found comfort in one person — Damia, Darwish’s younger sister and her closest friend. They were the same age, both turning 13 this year. And Damia was the only one who truly knew everything.
Every night, Dania would whisper into her phone under the covers, voice low, eyes tired.
“I know it’s stupid,” she’d say, “but I still hope he remembers my birthday.”
Damia, patient but honest, would reply, “It’s not stupid. But you can’t keep waiting on someone who hasn’t said anything since…”
Dania didn’t need her to finish the sentence. She knew.
But she couldn’t help it. July 25 was her secret finish line. Maybe Darwish would message. Maybe he’d say he missed her too. Maybe the boy she gave her heart to at 12 would still care now that she was almost 13.
And until then, all she could do was hope — and count the days.
