            It's a double entendre, of sorts. The abuse is a holy experience; it's her way of saying she forgives him for whatever misdeed he has done, whatever sin he's committed this time. 
            
            It also shows that the abuse is worth the tender, calm moments they have together. Those instances become less frequent, but he still cherishes them when they do happen. The physical pain is worth the sweet, heavenly relief of her patching him up and giving him any sign of “genuine” affection. He'll go through the pain over and over, as long as he gets even the smallest bit of tenderness afterward.

            Again, Harlan views the abuse as the forgiveness of his sins towards her. He thinks that, if he sits and takes it, everything will be fine. That the abuse, the forgiveness, is her showing him mercy, despite how many times he “messes up.” 
            
            She's broken him down to a point where he won't fight back ⸺ not that he ever has, really. He's exhausted both physically and mentally. Instead of fretting over when the next attack will happen, he starts to savor the more tender and calm moments of her relationship, as he doesn't have the energy to do much else anymore.
