             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ [ he rests his hands on his lap and crosses his ankles, a quiet but amused chuckle emitting from him. while he can see quite well in the dark, he finds himself looking at the bedside table instead of her. his head is tilted just right, to the point that he can still see her in his peripheral. ]    yes, you humans have made many comic books about people flirting with death. it’s amazing how far your imaginations can go.    [ he raises his brows and properly looks at her then, a smile tugging at his lips. ]    well, if you’re old, i would imagine that i am a.. dinosaur, or something.

i dunno .. you might be surprised.   [ she teases,  offering a small smirk hidden in the dark room.  upon the god of death sitting down at the edge of her bed,  she shifts beneath her covers.  bare legs clinging to warmth.  julia looks to him,  relaxed and fighting her tiredness.  she hums softly. ]    that’s okay .. i don’t need one.  i’m probably too old for them anyways,  huh?   [ she jokes. ]

             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ you know, not many people want to go to sleep with me.   [ he waits for a moment as his words register, and then he frowns. ]   you know what i mean — occupation, and all that.   [ he brushes his hands down the suit’s pants, and sits down on the edge of her bed. ]   yes, julia o’brien, i will stay until you are sleeping. don’t expect a bedtime story, though.. i have never been very good at those.

[ dark hues stay locked onto the other and she listens.  the first thing she notices is cassi’s body language.  the lack of eye contact,  the stillness,  the tension—-  maybe the tension is her?  a breath escapes through her nose.  it’s a breath she hadn’t realized she was holding.  t͟h͟i͟s͟.  she blinks,  speechless momentarily. ]    how was it supposed to happen then,  cas?

             ⠀⠀⠀⠀ neither.. or maybe both.   [ cassi clasps its hands together, lips pressing tight as it stares at the floorboard rather than looking at her. ]   when we met, and i told you who i was, you asked me why i did not intervene. i told you that it was balance, monsters among men, ‘the way it is supposed to go.’ except it was never supposed to happen like *this.*

[ she adjusts her position on the couch,  giving the other her full attention.  a subtle look is sent over to cassi—-  a knowing one.  a patient smile is offered. ]    it’s normal to have that happen.  is it something with work or your family?

             ⠀⠀⠀ the hell is so intimidating about me right now? i’m wearing a suit that has *glitter* all up on it.  (..)  the boy is a proper bottler if he loses his spine over a single comment, that is all i’m saying.

you forget yourself.  you’re more intimidating than you think.  i guess some can’t handle it.

             ⠀⠀⠀ [ cassius’ lips curl into the faintest flicker of a smile, but it vanishes almost as soon as it came. his fingers tap against the counter, his nails making a faint but rhythm-driven tapping sound. whether or not he wants to admit it, he knows that he isn’t here out of boredom; he never was to begin with. the ferocity she gave him on their first ever encounter was enough to draw him in, the fearlessness in her action of stabbing him in the sternum. she is a complex woman to him, but one that he wants to figure out. to cherish, to worship — if only she’d let him. ]   *this* is what it looks like when i’m bored, julia o’brien. have i ever done this with you before?

[ she’s already looking at him by the time he meets her gaze.  julia has always met others gaze when speaking to them—-  matthew always made sure she knew to do that.  to show respect.  to show that she cared.  to show willpower.  even in the darkest times,  especially.  even in times like these.  times where she feels vulnerable and real.  a secret part of her made it a promise to him,  even without him,  in this life.  the thumping in her chest only seems to grow with every word they share.  each of her hands rest on the edge of the island across from him.  she remains still,  watching his every move. ]    i can’t read your mind.  maybe you’re here because you’re bored.

             ⠀⠀⠀ one of oldest beings in the universe, yes.   [ his focus shifts to the counter itself. he finds it beautiful in the simplistic way—in the human way. he could understand how she liked it, how she made it eternal within her safest place. his vibrant blue gaze flicks up to the half-human, lips pressing into a thin line for a moment. ]   you’re a smart woman, answering my question with a question of your own. well.. i’m here when you didn’t call upon me. shouldn’t that be your answer?
