“Alex! Look at this!” Mason calls me over, and I step close to him to see everything.
“This is amazing.” I gaze around, climbing onto my knees on the rock ledge. Suddenly, a young child approaches, trying to lean forward to gaze at the same thing. While moving closer, they bump the soles of my shoes with surprising force, and I lurch forward, quickly finding myself falling. Wait, falling? I can hear screaming, and it takes a moment to realise it’s my own voice. My name is shouted from somewhere above; it sounds distressed. The ground approaches faster. I hope I never hit it. This last feeling of weightlessness before death is eerily serene.
But this feeling of painful nothingness seems to seal my fate in stone, and yet I still find peace.
