Bien turned his body. He wasn’t looking at the crowd anymore. He was looking at Christian.
Christian lowered his bass guitar, wiping his face with a towel. He looked up, confused but smiling—that easy, trusting smile he reserved solely for his best friend.
“They say you shouldn’t mix business with pleasure,” Bien said into the mic. The speakers hissed with feedback. “They say you shouldn’t fall for your bandmates. And they definitely say... you shouldn’t fall for your best friend.”
A gasp sucked the air out of the amphitheater.
Bien took a step closer to Christian. Under the blinding stage lights, he looked small, stripped of his instrument, armed only with a terrifying amount of hope.
“Christian,” Bien’s voice boomed, echoing off the concrete bleachers. “I don’t just want to be the guy standing next to you anymore. I’ve been writing songs about you since the day we met. I think... no, I know... I’m in love with you.”
Time seemed to suspend.
