@eebananaboat Esther grins at Katherine’s sudden change in demeanor. “Who do you think keeps Ben from getting beat to a pulp at school? Hah! Ben can’t fight off those bigger guys himself, he would die trying. I’m the one who always has to intimidate the bullies and scare them away. If it weren’t for me, Ben would come home with more than a black eye and a few cuts. Now, are you still gonna contemplate giving me the allowance?” Esther holds out her hand. Katherine is stunned. The air around her freezes.  The dots connect in her mind. Katherine thinks about the offer before sighing and pulling out her wallet. As soon as Katherine pulls the twenty out, Ben comes around the corner with Abbadon.
            “I found hi-“ Ben trails off. He stops dead in his tracks. Ben, who was grabbing Abbadon’s arm with his hand, unintentionally freed Abbadon from his clutch. Katherine’s eyes widen before tucking the twenty behind her back.
            “Ben! You’re back…! I see you found Abbadon.” Katherine forces a laugh as she tries to go in for a hug.

            “I understand, Ben. I just hate watching you get pushed around so often. Now, will you be a doll and go fetch Abbadon for me?” Ben lights up at his mother’s ‘persuasive’ tone, which in reality is just Katherine making her voice an octave higher than usual. Ben jumps from the counter, (ouch) and limps out of the bathroom, passing Esther on his way out. Esther watches him struggle-run down the hall and snickers to herself. 
            “Y’know…” Esther turns to Katherine, grinning, “you don’t have to hype him up like that.” Katherine pinches the bridge of her nose. 
            “Esther, now is not the ti-“
            “I just wanted to come and thank you for being a model in your little affirmation session with Ben…” 
            “What do you want, Esther.” Katherine crosses her arms. 
            “Oh…pfffft, you knowww..” Esther chuckles. 
            “No. I don’t know.” Katherine responds, firm and annoyed.
            “Well, I just came to…perchance…get a boost in my allowance.” Katherine cackles at Esther’s request. Katherine spins around to lean against the wall and look away from Esther. Katherine’s body shakes with mirth and amusement, making a few ghosts stare from outside of the bathroom. 
            “You’re crazy to even think I would-“
            “Well…I guess you don’t need anyone protecting your precious little Ben anymore then…” Esther shrugged. Katherine stops laughing. Her shoulders stop shaking. Her expression drops completely. She turns around. 
            “What.”
