Down a narrow side street somewhere in London…
is an old shop whose windows are usually dark and whose door is usually locked. Above the door is a faded sign on which you can just about read the legend: Munro’s Used Books – The Greatest Stories Ever Told. Through the grimy window you might be able to pick out teetering bookshelves crammed with unfamiliar books. If you visit on the right day, perhaps the cantankerous owner will pull open the door, give you a curt nod and admit you to his Aladdin’s cave.
But beware. The books in this shop are not normal books. Whoever you are, you’ll notice that as soon as you open one of them. But if you’re one of the rare few, a true Reader, Mr Munro’s books will be unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before.

Every school has its myths and legends…
and at St Joseph’s the oddest one of all is the story of the mysterious Chapter. Banned by the Head, mocked by the rest of the school, this covert group of sixth-formers meets in secret where they pass around strange old books. These books, sourced from an unknown location, are said to possess dark powers. It’s rumoured that one of the previous members of the Chapter became so obsessed with the books that it drove him mad…

Alfie Ray is 13…
and a compulsive reader. He’s a natural for the Chapter. As soon as he hears about it he knows he has to join.

Sophie Ashe is 16…
and a member of the Chapter.  When a young boy starts at the school who’s read more than any of them, Sophie admits him to the group, despite warnings of danger from the other members. And once she understands Alfie’s plan, she agrees to help him use the books to unlock his family’s secret.

But in doing so Alfie and Sophie discover the truth about the books in Mr Munro’s shop, a truth more terrible than they could have imagined…
